Your forest looks
eligible.
Based on your answers, your forest meets the key criteria for New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme. That's a good position to be in.
Your forest meets the three key ETS criteria
To be eligible for carbon credits under the ETS, a forest needs to tick these boxes. Based on what you told us, yours does.
Eligible species
Your main tree species qualifies under MPI's approved list for post-1989 forest.
Sufficient size
Your forest area meets the minimum size and canopy cover requirements for registration.
Established after 1989
The ETS applies to post-1989 forests. Yours falls within the qualifying period.
This is a self-assessment based on the information you provided. A formal eligibility assessment will confirm these details against MPI's full criteria.
Your forest has been absorbing carbon.
You may be owed credits for it.
New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme pays landowners for the carbon their forests absorb. If your forest is eligible, you earn New Zealand Units (NZUs) — also called carbon credits — which can be sold on the carbon market.
The amount you earn depends on your forest species, size, and age. Some landowners we work with discover their forest is worth far more than they expected.
HOW IT WORKS
Your forest absorbs CO₂ → MPI measures the carbon → You earn NZUs → NZUs are sold on the carbon market.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
Carbon prices fluctuate. Projections are indicative — we'll always give you a range and be straight about the uncertainty.
So — what could your forest
actually be worth?
That's the question we answer in a Carbon Strategy Session. In a 60-minute video call, we map your property with you, assess every eligible area, and calculate what it could return over 25 years — including any areas you're thinking about planting.
After the call, you'll receive a full written report with maps, projections, and next steps — something you can share with your accountant, bank, or whānau.
ON THE CALL
Live property mapping. Eligibility confirmed. Carbon returns modelled across all your forest areas.
AFTER THE CALL
A full PDF report — maps, financial projections, and a clear recommended path forward.
NO OBLIGATION
The session gives you the information to decide. There's no pressure to register — that's your call.

What people ask before booking
What if the full assessment finds my forest isn't eligible after all?
You'll know exactly where you stand — and why. We'd rather give you an honest answer than register something that doesn't qualify. If there are things you can do to change the result in the future, we'll tell you that too.
What do I need to prepare before the call?
Not much. It helps to have a rough idea of where your forest areas are and when they were planted or started regenerating. We take it from there.
How reliable are the carbon projections?
They're based on MPI's official lookup tables and current NZU market prices. Carbon prices move over time, and we'll show you a range rather than a single figure — along with a plain-English explanation of what that means for you.
Does booking this session commit me to registering?
Not at all. The session gives you the information to make a well-informed decision. Whether or not you proceed with registration is entirely up to you.
Can I talk to someone before I book?
Of course. Get in touch with Chris directly — chris@moxi.org.nz or 021 181 1880. Happy to answer questions before you commit.
