Your Forest Isn’t Eligible for Carbon Credits (Yet)
But there may be a path forward
Why you got this result:
Based on your survey answers, your forest does not meet the criteria for the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The reason is one of the following:
-
The forest was established before 1990
-
The tree species aren’t recognised as forest under the ETS
-
The forest is less than 1 hectare
Can this be changed?
In many cases, yes. You might still be able to:
Link small areas to create eligible forest blocks
Plant new forest that qualifies in the future

What is the ETS?
The ETS is New Zealand’s system for managing carbon emissions. If you have eligible forest, you can earn New Zealand Units (NZUs) — also known as carbon credits — for the carbon your forest absorbs. These can be sold, held, or used to offset emissions.
